NOWADAYSMIX SERIES 52AYS
Since 2022, Ays’s golden disco heart has been shining all across Europe. From Rainbow Disco Club to Lowlands Festival. She is a one-of-a-kind human being whose talent needs to be watched. Based in Rotterdam, she and Kuriosa continue to remind the city what real soul music sounds like during their bi-monthly 'Love Transmission' club nights. We're happy to have her for this month’s mix, stepping into a different light, one where depth and godlike mixing collide. It introduces us to a side we haven't heard of that much. A journey through the rhythms of house music. What’s in this mixtape? Because I’m mainly known for my disco sound, I’m taking this opportunity to introduce the listener to my 'deep house side.' In this mix, you’ll hear mostly Detroit and Chicago house, along with my favorite deep but sometimes lo-fi disco. The set feels a bit darker, but still contains plenty of grooves to keep you moving. I like to end my sets, and so this mix on a high note, just like the ending of a beautiful movie, and for me, that means closing with a feel-good slow jam. I’ll leave you with that moment (but of course, I can’t give too much away just yet). This mix comes straight from my vinyl collection, and I hope you’ll enjoy it and experience it for yourself! Favorite food and where? Impossible question, I’m really a foodie from Japanese ramen, sushi, and fried chicken to authentic pasta carbonara, Lebanese food, I’m a huge fan of French cuisine, and of my mother’s kale stew. In Rotterdam, I love going to Hinoki, Diepnoord or 'Klaargemaakt'. Who do you look up to? I’m surrounded by so many inspiring people in my life. So I definitely look up to close friends, but also my family and partner. When it comes to DJing, I look up to Ajuma. I find her vision on the business side of music really interesting, and I’ve already learned a lot from her. That classic music album we all need to know about? Another impossible question: if you haven’t listened to them yet, all of Stevie Wonder's albums are ones you should definitely check out, along with the albums of Donny Hathaway. This is Niecy by Deniece Williams was one of my first vinyl purchases, so it holds a special place for me. Somewhere you would like to live and get old? I'm in love with Paris; it's a dream of mine to live there. But for growing old, I think I’d prefer a quiet place near the sea. There are so many beautiful places ... I’ll see when the time comes. Ays, always a pleasure, thank you!
