ORIGINATORSEDDIE FOWLKES
Eddie Fowlkes is a pioneering Detroit DJ and producer often hailed as one of the founding fathers of techno. Born and raised in Detroit, he began DJing in the late 1970s, drawing inspiration from funk, soul, disco, and early electronic artists like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. In 1986, his release “Goodbye Kiss” on Juan Atkins’s Metroplex label helped define the emerging Detroit techno sound — machine-driven yet deeply soulful. Known for infusing techno with groove and emotion, Fowlkes played a key role in bridging techno and house, paving the way for what would later be called tech house. Over his long career, he has released on influential labels such as Metroplex, Tresor, and his own City Boy Records, maintaining a style rooted in Detroit’s musical spirit. Though sometimes less publicized than his peers Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, Eddie Fowlkes remains a crucial and respected figure in the evolution of techno music.
