NOWADAYSMIX SERIES 48BEVAN
Born in London and based in Amsterdam, Bevan brings a musicologist’s perspective to his craft. With a Master’s in Musicology and a role at Rush Hour Records, he digs deep into the discographies of his favorite artists, tracing connections between genres. Bevan is all about that garage house sound of the early ‘90s, layered with boogie and soul cuts that paved the way. For our February mixtape, Bevan dove deep into his passion for uncovering dance music’s rich history. What’s in this mixtape? It's a collection of records that I have bought and have played out a lot over the past 6 months across disco, boogie, deep, and garage house! As with all guest mixes I can try and keep it 100% fresh with finds that I haven't put in a mix before. This is also the first guest mix where I have included a lot of new and forthcoming productions (shout out DJ Split, Zopelar on the upcoming Handy Records release, Byron The Aquarius, Yann Polewka Tom Carruthers, and Julio J!) There's still plenty of 90's house and early 80's boogie in there too but it was fun to combine the new and the old. It's all vinyl apart from two tracks that haven't been released yet and I wanted it to move from classic boogie cuts into deep house, through to garage, and into uptempo things before finishing with gospel disco and soul bringing you into the light! Favorite food and where? Golden Dragon in Chinatown, London - best crispy fried noodles with chicken! Alford Arms in Frithsden for English pub food after a long woodland walk. My guilty pleasure is Five Guys, it was my first job when moving to the Netherlands and it's still my favorite burger. Who do you look up to? (In personal life) In my personal life, I would have to say my Mum. She always encouraged me to do something I enjoy and pursue what makes me happy and luckily I found that in music, which I get to enjoy through my day job and also now DJing at the weekend! It's nice to share experiences I have through music with her as well, so last month she came with some friends of hers when I played at Phonox in London and hopefully, she now realizes I wasn't losing my mind when I was 19 and deliveries of record mailers would turn up at our front door every day. That classic music album we all need to know about? Chaka Khan & Rufus - Masterjam! Rest in peace Quincy Jones, he really made masterpieces with so many albums but this one, especially for me! The perfect disco and soul album with slow jams, upbeat disco, and not a bad track on the entire album (which is unique for a lot of disco LPs from that period!) Somewhere you would like to live and get old? I'd like to think that even when I am old, I would still want to be in an exciting city or town and not deep in the countryside, but I think a happy medium between the two would be nice. I've always loved Brighton, and it's by the seaside, or if I was staying in the Netherlands, somewhere nice and green just outside Amsterdam, I guess!
