Five Tracks: Pomrad
On his new album Silver Blue, Pomrad is reinventing himself as a vocalist, fuses 80s fusion funk, raw electro-dance, and 90s rave grooves to craft his unique style of cosmic crooners. He selected five inspirational tracks for us that shaped his new album.
My Desire - Dreem Team Remix I use a lot of drum machine samples to make my own drum samples. In the song “Suzy Got Lost” I used them without much processing and placed them in a folky songwriters context. The Roland TR-909, Roland D-50 and Roland JD-800 are working together with my acoustic Kawai upright piano. Herp Albert - Making Love In The Rain The typical FM and PCM synthesis that I adore: Yamaha DX11 and Korg Opsix. You get that typical dreamy, glassy sound out of it. For me it is both melancholic and sexy. I just love these 80s Afro-American soul ballads. For some reason I often go back to that sound. On the album you hear this especially on “My Sweet Dear Lucky”, “The Antipode” and “Is It True?”.

Drexciya - Andreaen Sand Dunes Every now and then you can notice some influences from Acid and Detroit techno and other late 90s electro genres. It's hard to pinpoint, except for the track “Sad Dancer”. For this one I also used PCM synths together with a rompler-like production: Roland JV-1080 and Motif Classic, fed into a Tascam 464 4-track cassette recorder to get that funny and dirty lo-fi sound. Bobby Caldwell - Open Your Eyes On this track you hear how a beautiful mellow piano sound is combined with soft synths. That, but also the songwriting and way of singing is also something that strongly seeps through in my album. You can hear an upright piano in Suzy Got Lost and Don’t Wake Up, again combined with my favorite romplers and the JD-800. Now Shooz - Driftin’ I just can’t get enough of these PCM synthsounds. But also the way the song is build, very classical, nice and flowing, is similar on Is it True? and The Antipode. And everything is soaking in a bath of drippy FM synths: Opsix, JV-1080 and Motif Classic. I have a collection of both trashy and semi-professional cassette recorders to get a nice analog sauce over my synths. Listen and buy on Bandcamp
On April 10th, Pomrad will present his album Silver Blue at Het Bos, alongside Shoko Igarashi.
