NOWADAYSMIX SERIES 49VASCO
Next up is Vasco, a Utrecht-based DJ, record collector, and promoter for the infamous club night Weerd. His taste in music isn't bound to a specific genre. From disco oddballs and dusty acid-house to early Chicago grooves, his sets are a dynamic journey through the smooth, the percussive, and the raw. For the next edition of our mix series, Vasco steps up with a selection that captures his signature blend of depth and energy. What’s in this mixtape? I'm fond of tunes that are within the soulfull spectrum, but that are drenched in some kind of toughness. Whether it's sleazy disco, proto-house, boogie, or a dusty drumcomputer release, I love music with an attitude. For this recording, I've made a selection of my favourite New York (and Chicago) house releases from the mid- and late 80s. Think Easy Street Records, Winston Jones, Paul Simpson, and the early works of Boyd Jarvis and Timmy Regisford. I'm a big fan of their productions and love to play it out loud. A proper precursor of what house music came to be! Favorite food and where? When I'm going for a walk in Utrecht, I regularly visit the Italian deli Bigoli for a sandwich. They've got some great options, but I'll always end up with a focaccia caprese. Who do you look up to? (In personal life) My woman, my parents, and a bunch of close friends (you know who you are). They've shown me life and love and are the best inspirators around. It feels cool to surround yourself with people who you'd love to become! That classic music album we all need to know about? Bronski Beat - The Age of Consent. It's known for the classics Smalltown Boy and Why?, but it's a great album as a whole too! My favourite pick would be Love and Money, a sensual and melancholic groover. Somewhere you would like to live and get old? Lately, I'm starting to feel a bit more disconnected to 'city life' as a whole. While walking around, I'm fascinated by how we're all cooped up in our building blocks as cattle, moving our lives forward in the most efficient way possible. I found that putting effort into certain things - rather than consuming - gives a rewarding feeling. It puts the mind at ease and taught me that taking time is better than buying time. While I'm still happy with where I'm standing at the moment, I'm aiming for a future with more space, more nature, and more (shared) effort in daily needs. Ideally somewhere near the sea?
